Blogging Kick-start

Blogging is here to stay, and you cannot seem to get started even though you want to? Perhaps a gentle kickstart can help.

What is a Blog
The word ‘Blog’ comes from the term ‘web log’ literally meaning to keep a log on the web. Keeping a Blog is really like maintaining a journal on the internet (an online journal). You have the option to keep make your writings either private or public. Moreover, this can either be for individual or personal use, for an organization or a company. Whatever the purpose, personal or business use it is important that you treat your blog development like you would a real website – because it is.

Getting Started
Just as you would a regular website, you should decide beforehand what you will be blogging about. After deciding on the purpose of your site, your first consideration will be the focus or theme. Another issue that will immediately arise will be the Title of your Blog. You may just want a personal little space where you wish to jot down your thoughts. Or you may want to create a professional presence online. Your journal can become a full-fledged website.

Choosing a Blog Provider
I started Blogging just over two years ago when Blogger was still hot. Believe it or not, I was introduced to this by the then teenage son of a friend. He was (and still is) a computer whiz who is always teaching me new things. The concept of keeping a journal online appealed to me because I love writing and at the same time wanted a place to vent on several burning issues.

I soon made the switch from Blogger to Wordpress because the latter is for me far more versatile. Wordpress offers a free service where your blog will be hosted on the Wordpress domain. However, if you are serious about managing your Blog, and having full access and control – you should get an affordable hosting solution such as is offered here.

Other popular content management systems and web- log providers include:-
TypePad
Text Pattern

Setting up a Blog
Generally, providers of blogging services publish set up instructions for their users. You can either search their site or you will receive these in a read me file with the software.

Current up to date hosting providers all offer the convenient ‘one-click-install’ of Wordpress with even a basic account. You do just that, from the control panel of your hosting account, just follow the instructions to click and automatically install Wordpress on your domain.
